A Joint-Preserving Alternative to Knee Replacement in Prescott AZ

If knee arthritis is limiting your ability to move, work, or enjoy everyday life—but total knee replacement feels like too big of a step—you’re not alone. Many patients live in the space between conservative care and joint replacement.

At Granite Orthopaedics, we are proud to offer the MISHA™ Knee System, an innovative, joint-preserving treatment for medial knee osteoarthritis. This advanced option is now available with Dr. Richard Bassett, DO, giving patients a new path to pain relief without replacing the knee joint.

What Is the MISHA™ Knee System?

The MISHA™ Knee System (Medial Implantable Shock Absorber) is a first-of-its-kind implant designed to reduce stress on the inner (medial) side of the knee where arthritis most commonly develops.

Rather than replacing the knee joint, MISHA works like a built-in shock absorber, unloading pressure from the damaged area while allowing the knee to move naturally. The implant is placed outside the knee joint, beneath the skin, without removing bone or cartilage.

This tissue-sparing approach helps relieve pain while preserving your natural anatomy.

How MISHA Helps Relieve Knee Pain

Medial knee osteoarthritis causes pain when everyday forces—walking, standing, climbing stairs—place repeated stress on the damaged side of the knee.

MISHA is designed to:

  • Reduce load on the medial knee compartment
  • Absorb shock during movement
  • Improve function and mobility
  • Help patients stay active longer

Because the knee joint itself remains intact, many patients experience a smoother recovery compared to more invasive surgical options.

Who Is a Candidate for the MISHA Knee System?

MISHA may be an excellent option if you:

  • Have medial (inner) knee osteoarthritis
  • Experience knee pain during daily activities
  • Have tried physical therapy, injections, medications, or bracing with limited relief
  • Are not ready for total knee replacement
  • Want to preserve your natural knee joint

MISHA is often ideal for active adults who want meaningful pain relief while delaying or avoiding knee replacement surgery.

MISHA vs. Total Knee Replacement

Unlike total knee replacement, MISHA:

  • Does not remove or replace the joint
  • Does not require cutting bone or cartilage
  • Is performed as an outpatient procedure
  • Does not limit high impact activity/sports
  • Preserves future treatment options, including knee replacement if needed later

MISHA is not meant to replace knee replacement for advanced arthritis—but it can be a powerful option for the right patient at the right stage.

What to Expect from the MISHA Procedure

  • Outpatient surgery – most patients go home the same day
  • Implant placed outside the joint
  • No joint surface replacement
  • Gradual return to activity as guided by your surgeon

Our team of experts will evaluate your knee condition, imaging, lifestyle, and goals to determine if MISHA is appropriate for you.
