I found the technology a little over the top. Too technical, especially for elderly patients. The surgery scheduler was pleasant. Felt like my frustration was annoying the front office gal. It seemed like everyone was in a hurry to get me out of there. I'm an old lady and don't move very fast.June 3, 2026

If you have a complex condition like rheumatoid arthritis, be careful before agreeing to orthopedic surgery. I have rheumatoid arthritis and sought evaluation for rheumatoid nodules and related hand problems. Two orthopedic surgeons — Dr. Richardson and Dr. Mellinger — diagnosed me with carpal tunnel syndrome and recommended surgery. I had no meaningful reaction to any of the diagnostic tests either surgeon performed. Dr. Richardson performed a diagnostic injection specifically to confirm carpal tunnel; it had no effect. At my follow-up visit, he recommended surgery anyway. I have muscle atrophy in my hands, which can resemble carpal tunnel findings. In my case it is caused by rheumatoid arthritis — a distinction that should matter to any surgeon evaluating a patient with my history. My rheumatologist assessed my symptoms and confirmed they were consistent with rheumatoid arthritis, not carpal tunnel. I then sought a third opinion at AZOrtho in Phoenix. Dr. Leber confirmed I do not have carpal tunnel syndrome. He also offered options in his specialty that could actually help me. Carpal tunnel surgery is appropriate for many patients. My concern is that I came close to undergoing a surgery I did not need. I strongly recommend that anyone with a complex condition research their symptoms carefully, consult their specialist, and get more than one opinion before agreeing to surgery. A surgeon's priorities are not always the same as yours.April 29, 2026
